Bicycles for Bipolar
Fundraising Event
Bicycles for Bipolar
and other brain disorders is an awareness and fundraising event
designed for local NAMI Affiliates to work with local bicycling
organizations to promote mental health awareness and raise funds for
their respective organizations.
This fundraising event can be for mountain bike clubs, road bike
clubs, or any organization that wishes to raise awareness around
mental health, mental illness, and support NAMI's programs and local
Affiliates.
This event differs from the NAMI Walk in that the bicycle club
members do the awareness and fundraising. In order to do this, they
must first become familiar with the local NAMI Affiliate or Support
Group. This raises awareness about mental illness within the bicycle
club.

Having successfully learned about mental illness and NAMI's
programs, the bicycle club members then reach out to their family,
friends, co-workers, and social networks, and the community; further spreading
awareness. In this way, NAMI's message of hope and recovery can
reach an audience that would otherwise not have heard it.
This in turn benefits the bicycle
club by showing the public that the club is giving back to the
community.
In addition, since 1 in 4 families are affected by mental illness,
many of the bicycle club members are living with mental illness
themselves. Many of their friends, families, co-workers, and social
networks are also living with mental illness. In this way, many
people will learn about programs and services in their community
that they can take advantage of.
Proceeds from the event are split between the local NAMI Affiliate
or Support Group, the local bicycle organization, and NAMI Georgia.
